Memories are made of these, my Odyssey....

The Odyssey movie is now in theaters, and my daughter sent me a funny reel about how my Honda Odyssey deserves its own movie.

Honestly? She may be right.

I started driving a minivan after the twins were born. This particular Honda Odyssey has been with us for 16 years and has close to 190,000 miles on it. It has been with us  through thick and thin. And we gave it as much  love as it did give us by doing it's required maintenance.

It carried three growing children to countless school events, concerts, competitions, piano lessons, marching band practices, college visits, and more. It has helped us move children into and out of dorm rooms, and even across state lines. It has crawled through I-95 traffic, survived the George Washington Bridge into New York, and taken us as far north as Acadia National Park, as far south as New Orleans, and on many road trips to Detroit and New York City. It has even crossed the border into Canada.

When I think about it, I feel like I have lived my own odyssey.

These days, the back seats are mostly quiet. The children have grown and flown, but I still miss the laughter, the giggles, the endless chatter, and yes... even the arguing that once filled this van.

Just last week  while we were driving back after dropping off  one of the kids in a different state, it broke down in the middle of the road, and for a moment I wondered if this was the end of its story. Thankfully, it was repaired, and it's ready for a few more adventures.

If you happen to notice the rosary hanging inside, that has its own story too. My mom gave it to me when I first moved to the United States. It has traveled with me ever since, moving from car to car through every season of life. She's no longer here, but in a small way, she still rides along with me wherever I go. It's mostly symbolic.

And if you're wondering how it still looks so clean inside after all these years... all the credit goes to my husband.

Some people see an old minivan.

I see 16 years of memories on wheels.

Do you own one such vehicle ?

My self care journey - Oxygen mask.

“ In the event of a sudden drop in pressure, an oxygen mask will drop from above. Secure your own mask first before assisting others. ” The first time I heard this, I was flying for the first time in my life on an international flight from Mumbai to Atlanta via London. I was so excited to go to America on my own that I did not really pay that much attention to this routine preflight announcement. Since I had flown to America, it also meant flying back, again, several times to go home. I heard the same announcement during all those trips but at that point, they were still some words, their true meaning still had not registered.  Then came another first time of my life, this time it was flying with my first born, for the first time.  By this time, I was not as excited about flying, the novelty had completely worn off. Now I am only concerned about the safety of my baby, he is sitting in my lap, one year old. Then they make the above preflight announcement, in sever...

Journey as a mom driver.

Several years ago, when my parents were visiting, I took them to church for Easter Sunday mass. It was the first time I had driven since becoming a mother… for the second time around. This time, I had “twins.” They were less than two months old. I hadn’t driven in several months. I thought I could use the break from taking care of them. The church was not too far, I would be gone for at the most an hour and a half. Little did I know that it would be a defining moment in my journey as a mother. While at church, I just could not focus, they were at home with their father, they were safe, but that was the first time I had left them at home and gone somewhere. We ended up leaving before the final hymn. I was in a hurry to get home, only a few minutes from home. Sleep-deprived and anxious, I ran a red light. That split-second decision cost me more than I can explain. By the time a police officer got there  and approached the car, I had had a complete meltdown, bawling at the s...

My Little Patch of Happiness.

As I sit here and look out my window, I see my little patch of happiness . The gladioli in my little patch of garden are blooming once again. They are my pride, my joy, and my happiness. As I admire their colorful blooms , I can't help but reflect on our journey together. There is an interesting story behind these flowers. I planted these gladioli bulbs during the pandemic, in 2020. In the beginning, it seemed as though everyone around me had discovered a new hobby. People were baking bread, gardening, knitting, painting, and learning new skills. I, however, wasn't particularly interested in any of those things. To be honest, I don't have much of a green thumb. In the past, I had planted a few things, only to watch them slowly wither away. So, this time, I wasn't expecting much. I found these bulbs on sale at a local home and garden store and decided to plant them as an experiment, almost as a challenge to myself. I planted them in mid-April and then completely forgot a...
