Mother's Day!

Ok , so I went to Wal-Mart this morning, my substitute “church” and they wished me a”happy mother’s day” & handed me a rose. So while all of you are telling me that I don’t look like a mother of three, Walmart certainly knows so.I wonder what kind of research they did to know who is a mother and who isn’t, was it the four different kinds of bread in my cart or was it the “Capri Sun” that gave it away ? Then again, all my fellow moms , if nobody at home made you feel special , go to Wal-Mart. …Ramblings on this mother's day!

Jumble in my head!

Although , I speak , read & write English fluently, my basic education was done in Marathi, one of the many Indian languages . I learnt basic math, science, history & geography in Marathi. Somebody once told me that if & when you start dreaming in English, it is then that  you have mastered that language. I believe I dream in English & I almost, always think in English( the fact that I am writing this blog in English is a proof of that ) however, when it comes to basic math facts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication or division, my brain automatically translates all the numbers in Marathi,I do the math in Marathi, translate the answer back in English & then answer ,all in a few seconds. I know my multiplication table up to 12 , but If you question me in English,I translate the numbers in Marathi, calculate, retranslate in English & then answer . I don’t know if any or all the people that speak more than one languages do this ...

Winter of 2014.

We live in this southeast corner of VA where the winters are supposed to be mild; it gets cold, temperatures drop to 20’s in the night but little or no precipitation, may be an occasional snow of may be an inch or 2. But this year, we have had an awful winter with several snows leading to an accumulations of 8-9 ” at times. The schools have been cancelled for 7 days in the past month & half .We are now almost to the end of March & the weather today is ” cloudy with snow showers .”I am sitting here thinking will this ever end, will the warm temperatures ever come our way ? Some say, since we have had a rough winter, we will have a rough summer too . I personally will take the 100 degree hot summer versus the 20 degree cold any time. It even snowed as south as Texas & Florida this year, so there really was no escape. We have had periods of warm weather followed by longer periods of cold weather . I just hope that the mother nature makes its mind up soon ....Not much ha...

Jiffy Hip.

I am an Occupational Therapist. Twenty years ago, when I first started out in my career, the total hip replacement was a long surgery followed by a long rehab/recovery. The surgeon would cut open from the back of your leg, leaving a long scar; you had to follow strict hip precautions such as not crossing your legs, not to bend your hip past 90 degrees & some other restrictions in your daily activities because of the same. But now the surgery is very advanced rather minimally invasive. Instead of cutting from the back, the surgeons now cut from the front/side with a small scar, no restrictions of any kind & you can get up; walk, bear weight as tolerated & pretty much do anything that you did before. In most cases, it is only a day or two in the hospital, I have seen patients leave as soon as day one of their surgery & have complained of zero pain. The new type of total Hip replacement is nicknamed “Jiffy’” hip because of the speedy recovery. I am awestruck every ti...
