Humanity.
Once again, it takes the “bad” for the” good” to come out in people. Chennai, a major city in India is experiencing major floods, many have died, and many are still stranded. I read a few posts about how people are helping each other despite their race or religion, people from all walks of life coming forward to help in whatever way they can; heartwarming posts; but I wonder how mentioning people of different religion helping each other was even an issue. The issue is the safety of the people, meeting their basic needs, for food and drinking water, who the heck cares about their race or religion? Why is it even worthy of a mention? People helping other people, is that not enough? I also wonder if people in real life really think about all this before helping the person who is stranded, who needs their help or even vice versa, person who is stranded thinks about taking the help being offered to him. I have never experienced a situation like this myself where I either had to give shelter to or help people of different religion, ethnicity or nationality, a dire emergency or a natural disaster. The situations I face are a person begging at the Wal-Mart parking lot or at a street corner, a homeless person; I try to help without ever thinking about their ethnicity. But I neither follow a religion nor believe in one. I think most people do not think about all this when they are faced with a situation. I think people are people, they are humans first then anything else. I grew up catholic but I have a Hindu name , growing up in India where religion plays a very important role , the question would always come up , if I was Christian, why do I have a Hindu name ? I couldn’t understand why that was even a question, my father liked the name, so he named me but everybody else wanted to know if I was Christian or Hindu. People have come forward again and again to help fellow human beings despite their religion, race or cast but it is the same people who have also caused atrocities on the other human being in the name of religion or race. Why does it always have to revolve around one’s faith? Is having faith in humanity not enough? The disasters will come and go and I have faith, humanity will prevail. My ramblings for this Thursday!
